In the Garden of Men Cover "...it seems to me that the three-day gauntlet forces instinct to the fore; in the absence of conceptual and rewrite time, the writerly subconscious drives things on. Kupferschmidt's instincts have guided him flawlessly in this tough-minded and deeply moral look at the cost of being good in evil times."

About the International 3-Day Novel Contest

Can you produce a masterwork of fiction in three short days? The 3-Day Novel Contest is your chance to find out. The contest has run every Labour Day Weekend since 1977, and attracts writers from all over the world! It has been responsible for dozens of published novels, thousands of first drafts, countless good ideas and even a reality TV series. It's a thrill, a grind, and an awesome creative experience. How many crazed plotlines, coffee-stained pages, pangs of doubt and moments of genius will next year’s contest bring forth? And what will you think up under pressure?

Grand Prize: Publication
2nd Prize: $500

The next contest will take place September 5-7, 2009. Registration will open in spring 2009. If you want notification when registration opens, send an email to info@3daynovel.com to join our mailing list.

How It Works

The prizes make a good goal to keep you going, but the contest’s true rewards go to everyone who gives it their all: the 72-hour exile of writers block, bragging rights afterward, an amazing mental kick-start, and a shiny new first draft your novel.

To sign up, read the rules, get your registration in the mail by the Friday before the contest, make a few outline notes (if you wish) and then, you know, just simply write an entire novel over the three days of the Labour Day long weekend. You can do it! Keep energized, stay hydrated, keep your goal in sight and let the momentum of the contest charge your creativity and break through your blocks. Print up your masterwork, stick it in an envelope and mail to us for judging. We'll announce the best novels in January, hand out some prizes, and send a fancy certificate to everyone who delivered a novel. Then we publish the winner!

Use the links to your left for rules, registration information, frequently asked questions and details on some of the amazing and original winning novels that have come out of previous years. If you have any questions about the contest, email us at info@3daynovel.com.

Survival Tip #8

The Third Day Attack of Doubts (Feelings of Pitiable Failure)

... Take three deep breaths. Guzzle coffee, black or with sugar. Don't punish yourself. Do that on Tuesday. Get back to work. Take phone off hook. Pull drapes. If you feel lonely — an outcast — you are. That manuscript is now your only friend, the only one who cares. Finish it. Let it have a life, even if you don't. Bravo.
